We LOVE tacos in our house!! And I love Mexican dishes in general. If we are deciding to go out, I am almost always down for Mexican. A few years ago, I was interested in making our own seasoning because I didn’t like the amount of sodium and other additives in the packets from the store. I researched what ingredients were in different brands’ packets and found most of the same seasonings in all of them.

*This recipe has been tweaked a few times for the amount of certain ingredients for what I like best.

The seasoning can go with chicken, beef, or pork. My husband loves the seasoning. We have used it when I make a taco soup, and to add a little flavor to certain Mexican dishes that normally wouldn’t have the extra seasoning. For example, I have used it to add some flavoring to my black beans when I make black bean tostada, and added it to my white chicken chili recipe as well. This is delicious, plus since it is lower in sodium, it may help you digest it better.

Storage

I store the ingredients in a glass jar with a lid, like this Ball jar. When making it, it helps to quadruple the recipe so that there will be extra to store. That way, I won’t need to make the seasoning each time I cook. It stores really well, just try to keep it away from warm temps and humidity. Due to that, it may clump in the jar from the moisture. Below is the ingredient list for the homemade taco seasoning.

Homemade Taco Seasoning

1 TBSP Cumin

1 TBSP Chili Powder

1/2 tsp Salt

1/2 tsp Paprika

1/2 tsp Garlic Salt

1/4 tsp Garlic Powder

1/4 tsp Onion Powder

1/4 tsp Oregano

1/4 tsp Red Pepper Flakes

1/4 tsp Pepper

Now, just combine all the ingredients into the jar or container you are using, then shake it until combined. For 1 pound of meat, I use 2 Tablespoons. However, you can use more or less depending on how much flavor you want. So, the 2 Tablespoons is just a starting point for what I use. There is a great feeling knowing it has way less sodium than what I can get at the store, also I know there are no added ingredients in it either.

I hope you enjoy the seasoning! To sum this up, it is so easy to make and will take your tacos to another level with the homemade seasoning.
